Mosquito-repellent measures

Latest update: - Authors: Mieke Croughs, Ula Maniewski-Kelner

Mosquito-repellent measures consist of a combination of following measures.

Prevention

Clothing

Wear clothing that covers the arms, legs and feet. Consider wearing clothing impregnated with an insecticide (permethrin).

Insect-repellent products

Apply an insect-repellent product on all non-covered areas of the body.

Ensure that rooms are mosquito-free

Apply mosquito netting to windows and ventilation holes.

Consider using an insecticide spray or electrically heated plates, but only:

  • in a properly sealed room whilst you are not in the room.
  • or in a room with good ventilation if you are staying in the room.

Air-conditioning: a low temperature in a sealed room reduces the risk of mosquito bites, but is not effective enough and the other measures are still required.

Drape an impregnated mosquito net over your bed and put the edges under the mattress. Use special, stiffer mosquito nets for young children.

Also refer to the measures against tick bites.
