Important health risks
Malaria
The malaria risk is:
- High in certain regions in the southern third of the country. We recommend the use of mosquito-repellent measures from dusk till morning, in combination with the use of malaria tablets. Because of problems of resistance, the use of mefloquine (Lariam®) is not recommended.
- Moderate in the southern half of the country bordering Vietnam. We recommend the use of mosquito-repellent measures from dusk till morning. For people with an increased risk, we sometimes recommend preventive malaria tablets, or taking an emergency treatment with you. Because of problems of resistance, the use of mefloquine (Lariam®) is not recommended.
- Low in the northern half of the country and close to the border with Thailand. We recommend the use of mosquito-repellent measures from dusk till morning.
There is no malaria risk in Vientiane (city center).
In case of fever during or after your journey, get tested for malaria as soon as possible.
